Making Stained Glass - Narrow window question

I am making a window for sidelite next to a front door. It is 8" x 80". I plan on leading it, as I think it is the strongest method for this size of window. Would I have to reinforce it in any way? It will be put over an existing window and trimmed into place.

Thanks for your comments.

Milly's reply:

Thanks for your question Linda, it's an important issue. As you suggest, the window is narrow enough to not need much support. However, I would integrate pieces of lead came about every 18" with a steel core into your window. Make sure they go the full width, from one side to the other. They do bend a bit, which is helpful when making stained glass, especially if your design is curvy!
That should make it strong enough so that it doesn't sag. Hope that helps.

Lead Came Reinforcement
by: Lee E. Klade, Proprietor at Klade Werks

There are several reinforcement products available that can be inserted into regular lead came if your design contains significant curves.

One example can be found at: http://www.delphiglass.com/copper-foil-supplies/foiling-supplies/copper-reinforcing-strip-25-ft.

You may need to tin the copper strip prior to insertion if the glass in your design is highly transparent.

Best of Luck!
