Rose Blanche Lighthouse in Stained Glass Applique

"Rose Blanche Lighthouse"

A Wyoming client had enjoyed "the vacation of a lifetime" with his wife, including a visit to this lighthouse in Newfoundland, so wanted it rendered in stained glass for their home (a geodesic dome!). I used the stained glass applique technique to create the lighthouse large, stone by stone, since stained glass copper foil would have required a ghastly amount of solder. One of the adhered pieces came loose during shipment (gasp!), but was easily replaced by the client, following simple instructions. (Shipping stained glass is always risky: insure it!)

Milly's reply:
They sound like interesting clients... I love the colour palette here, really subtle with nothing garish about it whatsoever. And the grouting lines are nearly invisible, it's a really good advert for the technique, as you can minimise the 'blackness' that is sometimes too dominant in leaded stained glass panels.

The technique is unduly neglected, I think! It certainly makes for "freedom of expression" in stained glass art. You can see more examples by my wife Nasrene MacDonald and me on her web page at

Try it, and post the results, Noah! :>)

Beautiful and fascinating. I had not heard of stained glass applique before seeing this panel. Nor had I heard of Ichiro Tashiro - what stunning work. I note that Ichiro Tashiro's work is 90% copper foil. Can you direct me to other reliable information and examples of stained glass applique please? Milly, keep up the good work - your site is always worth visiting.
